You Keep Saying You Don’t Feel Safe… But What If You Are?

Updated: Apr 19
I had to learn this the hard way...

Do you sometimes wonder if you’ll ever feel emotionally safe?
Even with someone who is patient with you…gentle in conflict…willing to repair…consistently showing up?
And still, something in you stays tight.
Guarded.
Unconvinced.
So you start to wonder if they’re the problem.
But what if they’re not?
What if the safety you’re waiting for is already being offered…and something in you doesn’t know how to receive it?
This was me.
Especially in the moments that mattered most —when something hurt…when we had to talk about it…when repair was needed…when things broke down between us.
My husband would do everything right.
He softened.
He stayed.
He tried different ways to reach me.
And I… couldn’t drop my guard.
In those moments, my body would tighten. My words would get sharp or shut down completely. I would pull away right when closeness was being offered.
Not because I didn’t love him.And not because of anything he was doing. This pattern was already in me, long before our relationship.Something in me didn’t trust that it was safe to.
So I stayed armored. Careful. In control.
And it cost us.
I felt paralyzed.Lonely.Hopeless, even. Like no matter what he did, nothing could reach me.
And him?
Discouraged. Shut out. Standing right in front of me, trying to love me — and unable to get in.
We would both end up hurting. Right there in the same space —disconnected, and unable to find our way back to each other.
When you’ve learned that closeness comes with pain, your system protects you.
It questions.
It scans.
It keeps distance.
And it doesn’t just turn off because someone good shows up.
Sometimes, it tightens even more.
Here’s what changed things for me.
Not a big breakthrough. Not a moment where I suddenly felt completely safe.
Just a small practice:
2% more.
When everything in me wanted to shut down,I would soften… just a little.
Share a little more. Stay a little longer.
Let him in… just 2% more than what felt comfortable.
That was the shift.
The moment I stopped waiting to feel safe…
and started letting love in, and it’s where this work was born.
Because safety isn’t a switch you flip. It’s something you build — moment by moment.
And sometimes, it’s as simple as making a quiet choice:
To trust a little more than you did yesterday.
To loosen the armor, just slightly.
Love doesn’t only ask your partner to create safety.
It asks you to receive it.
Not all at once.
Just 2% more.
That’s how the armor begins to fall.
Deeply simple.
